Netflix release a “His & Her” set of trailers for their new and very original rom-com Marriage Story

Scar-Jo and Adam Driver are falling in (and out) of love.

Well, isn’t this clever?

The romantic comedy can be a difficult genre to be innovative with. Usually they simply involve two attractive people overcoming minor obstacles, normally with the assistance of some wacky best friends, and in the end they kiss in the airport or on a bridge.

Easy.

But some rom-coms have tried to drop a pebble in the pond here and there, like with (500) Days Of Summer going back and forth between the good and the bad times, or Definitely, Maybe treating it like a mystery (before having the idea “borrowed” by How I Met Your Mother).

Rom-coms are great (shut up, they are, don’t @ me), and when they’re done differently and done well, then you’ve totally got our attention.

And so we’ve got Marriage Story, a new Netflix exclusive movie starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, and the streaming service has cleverly dropped two trailers for the movie, showing the romance from both of their sides.

“Marriage Story is a love story that reveals itself within the breakdown. With these companion trailers I wanted to show the relationship through the eyes of both characters. There are many sides to every story, and the movie embraces these different viewpoints in order to find the shared truth,” said the movie’s writer and director Noam Baumbach, who previously brought us arguably Netflix’s best exclusive movie to date, The Meyerowitz Stories.

The movie also stars Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta, with cinematography by Ireland’s own Oscar-nominated Robbie Ryan (The Favourite).

This could both be lining up to get a lot of potential awards talk later in the year, as well as being added to the list of all-time great romantic comedies.

Marriage Story is due to arrive on Netflix this autumn.
