It makes the blockbuster a surprising reunion for one of the best shows of recent years.
Marvel’s upcoming Blade movie has recruited a new writer in True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, according to reports.
Two-time Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali (Green Book, Moonlight) is set to make his onscreen debut as the title vampire hunter in the blockbuster. This is after the actor made a voice cameo appearance in a post-credits scene in the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) entry Eternals.
Along with creating True Detective, Pizzolatto also penned the books Between Here and the Yellow Sea and Galveston. The writer joining the crew of the upcoming Blade movie makes the project a True Detective reunion as Ali starred in the third season of the anthology crime drama.
The Hollywood Reporter states that Blade already has a script penned by Michael Starrbury (When They See Us) and that Pizzolatto has been working off of this draft for a few weeks now. The outlet also says that the film is aiming to start production in late May.
Mahershala Ali will play half-human, half-vampire Blade
Wesley Snipes previously played Blade in a trilogy of movies between 1998 and 2004. Along with Ali, the cast for the reboot of the character that will launch him into the MCU also includes Aaron Pierre (Old), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) and Mia Goth (Pearl).
The upcoming Blade film was initially set for a cinema release on 3 November 2023. However, this was delayed due to director Bassam Tariq leaving the project.
He has since been replaced with filmmaker Yann Demange (’71, Lovecraft Country) with the blockbuster now set to arrive in cinemas on 6 September 2024.
