Our TV movie pick for today (Friday, 26 December) is Maverick, the '90s Western comedy starring Oscar-winners Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs) and Mel Gibson (Braveheart).
Based on an older TV series, the film follows the title character (Gibson), a card player and con artist, hoping to join a poker contest with an impressive payoff. To enter, however, Maverick must first put up a large cash sum.
As such, he scams hopeful contestants Annabelle (Foster) and Angel (Alfred Molina, Boogie Nights) in a preliminary card game to win the money he needs, making enemies of both players.
"While trying to evade Annabelle and Angel, the crafty Maverick realises a cunning marshal (James Garner, star of the original Maverick show) is also on his tail."
The movie was written by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, Superman).
Praised for its humour, light-hearted tone and performances (it is also filled with major cameos), Maverick was a box office hit and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
Currently boasting a high IMDB score of 7.0, the film is airing on TV today on the channel Comedy Central at 12pm midday. It's also available to rent on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play and the Sky Store.
