A mind-bending psychological thriller and 5 more big trailers you might have missed this week

Stephen Porzio

That includes teasers for the upcoming Game of Thrones and Star Wars spin-offs and a drama miniseries about the Sex Pistols…

Welcome back to JOE’s weekly trailer column.

As usual, we’ve rounded up the best teasers released in the world of film and TV in the past seven days for your perusal.

You can check them out below.

Don’t Worry Darling

The biggest movie trailer to drop this week was for Don’t Worry Darling, the sophomore feature from director Olivia Wilde (Booksmart).

It centres on a 1950’s housewife (Florence Pugh) living with her husband (Harry Styles) in a utopian community run by the latter’s enigmatic boss (Chris Pine).

However, going by the mind-bending teaser, it appears that beneath the community’s perfect exterior lies disturbing secrets.

Wilde has compared Don’t Worry Darling to massive movies that see characters’ perceptions of reality come under question like Inception, The Matrix, and The Truman Show, so the bar is set high for this one.

It arrives in Irish cinemas on 23 September.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

Daniel Radcliffe has forged a good career since the release of his final Harry Potter film in 2011, appearing in such interesting films as The Woman in Black, Swiss Army Man and Imperium.

However, his latest project sees him take on a part unlike anything he’s played before – the role of musical parody sensation “Weird Al” Yankovic.

Interestingly enough, this biopic is co-written by Weird Al himself, with its plot synopsis saying it will explore “every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame… to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle”.

It’s set for a release later in the year.

Cannon Arm and the Arcade Quest

One for gamers, this Danish documentary follows Kim Cannon Arm, a man who trains – with the help of his friends – to be the first in the world to play an arcade machine from the early ’80s for 100 consecutive hours.

Having already garnered a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it comes to cinemas in Ireland on 24 June.

House of the Dragon

Moving onto TV, HBO unveiled more footage from its upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon.

Set 200 years before the events of the massive hit, the new series tells the story of a particularly difficult time for House Targaryen, one that set sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon.

As for the source of the conflict? Why, the Iron Throne, of course.

Featuring an ensemble cast including Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Paddy Considine and Rhys Ifans, HOTD will launch on Sky Atlantic and NOW on 22 August.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Another new chapter in an already beloved story, this Disney+ series will see Ewan McGregor reprising his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, the six-part series will focus on Kenobi watching over young Luke Skywalker and evading the Empire’s elite Jedi hunters during his exile on the desert planet Tatooine.

Also returning for the show from the prequel trilogy will be Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader when the series premieres on 27 May.

Pistol

Also coming to Disney+ soon is Pistol, a new series that will be directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting).

The biographical drama is based on the memoir of Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, with the show chronicling the legendary punk band’s rise to prominence and notoriety.

Pistol will begin streaming on 31 May.
