Stephen Porzio

Inglorious Basterds

The war epic made Christoph Waltz a household name.

Staying in this Saturday evening? Not to worry, as JOE has you covered with this list of the best movies on the box tonight.

Here are your options.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 – E4 – 6.25pm

The conclusion to the Jennifer Lawrence-starring YA franchise.

Inglourious Basterds – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish US soldiers (led by Brad Pitt) coincides with a theatre owner’s (Melanie Laurent) vengeful plans for the same.

Some historians may take issue with our pick for tonight, as it sees writer-director Quentin Tarantino playing very fast and loose with real-life events.

However, what’s undeniable is that Inglourious Basterds is incredibly exciting and well-acted (particularly Christoph Waltz in an Oscar-winning villainous role) and is filled with the iconic dialogue and shocking violence that made its filmmaker such an icon.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard – Film Four – 9pm

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson do their thing in this average if watchable action-comedy.

Venom – Channel 4 – 9pm

A wild and oddly endearing performance from Tom Hardy makes this flawed superhero flick worth a watch, especially as its sequel is in theatres now.

Friends with Benefits – Comedy Central – 9pm

This romcom sees Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis play – you guessed it – friends with benefits.

Mom and Dad – Horror Channel – 9pm

Nicolas Cage lets loose once again in this comedy-horror about a mass hysteria of unknown origin that causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.

Fifty Shades Darker – RTÉ Two – 9.45pm

This sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey got even worse reviews than the original.

The Blind Side – RTÉ One – 10.15pm

This 2009 sports drama earned its lead actress Sandra Bullock an Oscar.

In the Line of Fire – ITV 4 – 11pm

This taut ’90s thriller focusing an aging, disgraced Secret Service agent (Clint Eastwood) who attempts to prevent the US president from being assassinated.

Total Recall – Channel 4 – 11.10pm

Colin Farrell stars in this so-so sanitised remake of the Arnie sci-fi classic.
