An epic end-of-the-world action movie and 8 more movies and shows to watch this week

Rory Cashin

This week is absolutely jam-packed with some incredible new releases.

January is over! FINALLY! Let us celebrate with some new movies and shows. But which ones should you watch? And which ones should you avoid?

That is exactly what you’ll find out in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which can be watched in full below, or you can skip to the cinema reviews (5:15), home entertainment recommendations (12:45), and classic re-watches (22:30).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 4 February.

MOONFALL

The director of Independence Day, 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow is back to once again destroy the planet as we know. Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson and John Bradley are the astronauts attempting to save Earth when they discover that… well… the moon is falling. Expect big explosions.

JACKASS FOREVER

12 years since Jackass 3D arrived in cinemas, the crew are back with the usual mix of comedy and volatile pranking. We chatted to Johnny Knoxville and Chris Pontius about the new movie, and you can check out that interview in full right here:

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

PAM & TOMMY

The story behind the most famous sex tape of all time, Lily James and Sebastian Stan play Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, the newlywed celebrity couple who find their private recording has been stolen from the home and shared across the world. Check out our in-depth review of the series right here.

The first three episodes arrive on Disney+ on Wednesday, 2 February, with the rest of the season arriving weekly.

MURDERVILLE

Will Arnett heads up this comedy murder-mystery, joined each week by a different celebrity (including Conan O’Brien, Sharon Stone and Annie Murphy) who arrives without a script, and must play along to help solve the crime.

All six episodes arrive on Netflix on Thursday, 3 February.

THE TINDER SWINDLER

An international psychological thriller disguised as a documentary, this tells the true story of a group of women who were seduced by the same man on the dating app, only to fall victim to his dangerously manipulative mind-games. Check out our full in-depth review of the movie here.

The documentary arrives on Netflix on Wednesday, 2 February.

REACHER

After one very good and one very bad Jack Reacher with Tom Cruise, we get this TV adaptation of the much-loved Lee Child series of action-packed books, with Alan Ritchson a much more accurate representation of Reacher’s physicality.

The first episode arrives on Prime Video on Friday, 4 February.

IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA SEASON 15

The one where they visit Ireland!

The new season is available on Netflix right now.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section, with Rory and Eoghan each picking a movie for you to enjoy at home this weekend, and putting it to a public vote to decide which is the better pick…

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – THE PEACEMAKER

Released 25 years ago – and added to Netflix this week! – this action-thriller with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman feels like the first tentative steps towards grittier spy fare like Bourne and Craig’s Bond movies. Plus it was the first ever made by DreamWorks Pictures!

Eoghan’s Pick – GROUNDHOG DAY

For the week that is in it, a classic rom-com with a Earth-scorchingly acidic turn by Bill Murray. Available to watch on NOW and Sky right now.
