Bad news for moviegoers.
In some sadly predictable news, Disney has confirmed that it is pushing 2020 movies Black Widow and West Side Story back to next year amid challenges posed by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson as the main character, had been set to hit the big screen on 6 November, after already having been pushed back earlier this year.
However, it will now open on 7 May of 2021, and as a result, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been pushed from 7 May until July of 2021.
Disney has toyed with releasing some of its major productions on the streaming service Disney+, having done so with Hamilton and Mulan. It appears as though this experiment will not be tested on Black Widow.
Another Marvel film, Eternals (which stars Barry Keoghan), has also been pushed back to 5 November, 2021.
Actor Kumail Nanjiani said: “There’s a pandemic. Nothing is more important than health and lives. I can’t tell people to go to a movie theatre until I feel safe going to one.”
This means that no MCU movie will be released in all of 2020, marking the first year without a movie associated with the cinematic universe since 2009.
However in more positive news from the MCU, the highly-anticipated TV show WandaVision will be released at some point this year on Disney+.
A new trailer for the series was released during the week, giving us a glimpse into what appears to be one of the strangest MCU creations ever.
Another MCU television show, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, was due to be released in August of 2020, but it was delayed indefinitely, and is now not expected to be released until next year.
