A very funny buddy action comedy is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

the nice guys

It’s from the writer of Lethal Weapon.

At long last, it is Saturday.

And if you are staying in tonight, there’s a packed line-up of films playing on telly.

Here’s your options this evening.

The Nice Guys – Film4 – 9pm

Our pick for tonight, this action comedy is set in 70s Los Angeles and centres on a private eye (Ryan Gosling) and a tough enforcer (Russell Crowe) who team up to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl (Margaret Qualley).

Co-written and directed by Shane Black (who penned the screenplay for Lethal Weapon), The Nice Guys was not a huge hit at the box office when it came out in 2016.

It’s a real shame because the movie – with its zinger-filled screenplay, surprisingly hilarious performances by Crowe and Gosling and twisty mystery – should have really launched a franchise.

Kill Bill: Vol 1 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

The first part of Quentin Tarantino’s terrific martial arts epic.

Kingsman: The Secret Service – RTÉ2 – 9pm

The first and best entry in the spy comedy franchise.

Terminator: Salvation  – W – 9pm

The one with Christian Bale.

This is 40 – Comedy Central – 9pm

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd star in writer-director Judd Apatow’s “sort-of-sequel” to Knocked Up.

Final Score – Sky Showcase – 9pm

In this well-reviewed action thriller, an ex-soldier (Dave Bautista) wages a one-man war against armed terrorists who take control of a packed football stadium.

Jaws 2 – ITV4 – 9pm

Police Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) believes another shark is terrorising his beach town in this sequel to the Steven Spielberg classic.

Platoon – TG4 – 9.20pm

Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe lead the cast of this gritty, unflinching Vietnam War drama that won the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

Bloodshot – Channel 4 – 9.20pm

Vin Diesel stars in this 2020 action film as a soldier who dies before being brought back to life with superpowers by an organisation that wants to use him as a weapon.

This is Spinal Tap – BBC Two – 10.40pm

This ’80s music mockumentary is widely considered one of the best comedies of all time.

Last Action Hero – Film4 – 11.15pm

Pride – RTÉ2 – 11.20pm

This acclaimed historical comedy-drama centres on a group of UK gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners’ strike in 1984.
