There are some great choices on the small screen tonight.

Here’s JOE’s picks for the best.

The Martian – Film 4 – 6.15pm

Matt Damon stars as an interplanetary gardener who gets stranded on Mars in an adaptation of the Andy Weir novel.

They Shall Not Grow Old – BBC 4 – 9pm

Peter Jackson’s WWI documentary shows life on the British front lines via meticulously restored footage.

Assassins Creed – E4 – 9pm

A passable adventure film starring Michael Fassbender in an adaptation of the game series.

21 Jump Street – ITV 2 – 9pm

A brilliant buddy cop comedy starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum going deep undercover in a high school.

This Is 40 – Comedy Central – 9pm

Leslie Mann and recent World’s Sexiest Man winner Paul Rudd feature in this Knocked Up spin-off as a couple grappling with ageing.

Unbroken – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Angelina Jolie directs this biographical drama about the Olympian Louis Zamperini who spent 47 days in a POW camp.

Pain and Gain – Sony Movie Channel – 9pm

It’s about drive, it’s about power, it’s about Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as two bodyguards trying to make quick cash via the criminal underworld.

The Accountant – RTÉ 2 – 10.15pm

A by-the-numbers thriller starring Ben Affleck a math genius who lives a double life as an accountant for a huge criminal organisation.

Vice – BBC 2 – 11pm

Christian Bale transforms himself into former Vice President Dick Cheney in this comedy drama.

Straight Outta Compton – ITV 4 – 11.20pm

In the mid 80’s, a rap group emerge from the streets of LA, and change the landscape of American music forever.

This music biography is must see viewing for any fans of hip-hop, with brilliant performances from Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, and O’Shea Jackson as his dad, Ice Cube.
