A fun action-comedy with a great cast is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It’s based on a comic book miniseries.

Tomorrow is St Patrick’s Day.

As such, those planning a big day of celebrating may want to kick back and relax tonight.

Thankfully, there are some good flicks on the telly this evening.

Here’s your options.

Red – Film4 – 9pm

Its title standing for “retired, extremely dangerous”, this comic book adaptation tells the story of a former black-ops CIA agent (Bruce Willis, back when he was in good movies) who reassembles his old team when he finds his now peaceful life threatened.

Our pick for tonight boasts sharp one-liners and slick set-pieces, making it a breezy, easy-to-watch action comedy.

It also happens to have an incredible cast, including Brian Cox, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker and Morgan Freeman.

Evil Dead II – Horror Channel – 9pm

The second and widely considered best in Sam Raimi’s legendary horror franchise.

Bullitt – ITV4 – 9pm

This very cool ’60s neo-noir action thriller starring Steve McQueen boasts one of the best car chases ever captured on film.

V For Vendetta – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

This impressive graphic novel adaptation stars Natalie Portman and a masked Hugo Weaving as people living in an alternative future where a fascist totalitarian regime dominates the UK.

The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell – TG4 – 9.30pm

This Irish docudrama tells the true story behind “one of the most compelling murder plots in Irish history”.

Doomsday – Horror Channel – 10.40pm

If you imagine Escape from New York but set in Scotland and with a dash of 28 Days Later and Mad Max thrown in, you would have Doomsday.

Roxanne – Great! Movies Classic – 11.05pm

This ’80s romantic comedy is a modern retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, adapted by and starring Steve Martin.

Collateral – ITV4  – 11.20pm

A cab driver (Jamie Foxx) finds himself the hostage of a hitman (an against type Tom Cruise) on a contract killing spree in this tremendously entertaining crime thriller from Heat director Michael Mann.

Four Weddings and a Funeral – Film4 – 11.35pm

One of the most beloved romantic comedies ever made.

Full Metal Jacket – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45pm

Legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick directs this unflinching Vietnam War drama.
