Movies on TV Friday 5 April

Good day, film fans.

And that day is Friday 5 April.

Every day on JOE, we put our heads together and sift through the schedules in order to bring you, our dearest readers, the best movie options available via the television screen.

Sometimes, there are classics. Other times, there are underrated gems. Often, a film that is so bad it really should be classified as good.

Friday is usually a good day for all of those, so let’s see, shall we?

The Abyss – SyFy – 9pm

Trippy and occasionally terrifying underwater adventure from James Cameron.

Pitch Perfect – ITV2 – 9pm

Fun and upbeat comedy that spawned a sequel or two.

In the Line of Fire – Virgin Media One – 9pm

Clint Eastwood’s ageing secret service agent faces off against John Malkovich’s ruthless assassin. Strong ’90s thriller vibes.

Rocky IV – ITV4 – 9pm

Cocaine: The Movie.

3:10 to Yuma – TCM – 9pm

Compelling slow-burn Western with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

The Hunger Games – E4 – 9pm

Battle Royale.

Still Alice – RTÉ 2 – 10.30pm

Tough drama that shines a thoughtful light on Alzheimer’s disease with Julianne Moore, Kristin Stewart and Alec Baldwin.

Fast and Furious 6 – Film 4 – 10.55pm

The one with the longest runway known to man.

The Last Boy Scout – TCM – 11.35pm

Wildly entertaining and violent mismatched team-up thriller with Bruce Willis, Damon Wayans and an electric script.

Rain Man – BBC One – 11.55pm

Cruise. Hoffman. You should know this one.

Spring Breakers – Channel 4 – 12.10am

Harmony Korine’s neon-soaked ugly love letter to excess finds a quartet of high school girls running afoul of James Franco’s comical drug dealer.

Unstoppable – SyFy – 12.30am

The final directorial effort from the late Tony Scott contains a few of his favourite things; a fast-paced plot, caffeinated visuals and Denzel Washington, who we’d watch in anything, in fairness.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
