A powerful supernatural drama is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The three-hour-long epic is based on a Stephen King novel.

It’s Saturday, a day that usually sees bountiful offerings in terms of movies available to watch on telly.

That is the case today, at least.

Here’s your options for Saturday, 2 April.

Pacific Rim – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Guillermo del Toro’s rip-roaring sci-fi action blockbuster is about gigantic humanoid mechas fighting alien monsters.

What’s not to like?

Limitless – Sky Showcase – 9pm

Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the show in this so-so romantic comedy starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston.

The Green Mile – RTÉ2 – 9.30pm

Our pick for tonight sees the writer-director of The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont, adapt another story by Stephen King for the screen.

The fantasy drama follows a death row prison guard (Tom Hanks) during the Great Depression as he witnesses supernatural events following the arrival of an enigmatic convict (Michael Clarke Duncan) at his facility.

Clocking in at over three hours, The Green Mile is an incredibly compelling watch thanks to its excellent central performances and powerful, surprising story.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Alibi – 10pm

The terrific Hollywood adaptation of the best-selling novel starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

Firefox – ITV4 – 10.30pm

Clint Eastwood stars in and directs this fun if long action thriller about a pilot sent into the Soviet Union on a mission to steal a prototype jet fighter.

Funny Cow – TG4 – 10.40pm

In this acclaimed comedy-drama, a comedian (Maxine Peake) uses her troubled past as material for her stand-up routine and tries to rise up through the comedy circuit by playing Northern England’s working men’s clubs.

Get Out – Film4 – 11.15pm

Arguably the best horror of the past few years.

Assassin’s Creed – Channel 4 – 11.25pm

A divisive film adaptation of the popular video game series starring Michael Fassbender.

Full Metal Jacket – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45pm

Legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick directs this unflinching Vietnam War drama.
