One of the best Irish films ever made is among the movies on TV tonight

Today is Saturday, a day that usually boasts a packed movies on TV line-up.

That’s true today too.

Here are your options.

Hancock/Brightburn – Film4 – 9pm/10.45pm

Two decent flicks offering unique takes on the superhero genre are airing on Film4 tonight.

The first tells the story of a vigilante superhero (Will Smith) who tries to improve his image as his reckless actions routinely cost his city millions.

The second is a horror that asks the question: what if Superman was an evil child?

Ghostbusters – RTÉ2 – 9pm

Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy lead the cast of this 2016 reboot of the classic supernatural comedy.

SAS: Red Notice – Sky Showcase – 9pm

A British action-thriller.

American Pie: The Wedding – Comedy Central – 9pm

The third one.

La Belle Époque – BBC Four – 9pm

This fun French romantic comedy-drama focuses on a company that allows people to perform a version of “time travel” by staging historical reenactments.

Ryan’s Daughter – TG4 – 9.50pm

In this epic romantic drama from filmmaker David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia) set in the wake of the 1916 Easter Rising, a married woman in a small Irish village has an affair with a troubled British officer.

Exorcist: The Beginning – Horror Channel – 10.40pm

A prequel to horror masterpiece The Exorcist.

The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear – Comedy Central – 10.55pm

Leslie Nielsen returns as bumbling policeman Frank Drebin in this fun crime-spoof sequel.

Robocop 3 – ITV 4 – 11pm

Robert John Burke replaces Peter Weller as the title character in this 1993 sequel.

Adam & Paul – RTÉ2 – 11.05pm

Our pick for tonight, this 2004 Irish comedy-drama follows a day in the life of two Dublin drug addicts (played incredibly by Mark O’Halloran and Tom Murphy) as they wander around the city trying to score heroin.

Gritty yet tender, hilarious yet heartbreaking, Adam & Paul has gone on to be considered as one of the greatest Irish films ever made.

The debut feature of director Lenny Abrahamson, the filmmaker went on to get Oscar-nominated for his work helming the 2015 Brie Larson-starring drama Room.

A Time to Kill – BBC One – 11.50pm

Matthew McConaughey, Samuel L. Jackson and Sandra Bullock star in this legal drama based on a John Grisham novel.

King of Thieves – RTÉ One – 12.10am

Michael Caine leads an ensemble cast in this heist film based on a true story.

Her Smell – Film4 – 12.35am

Elizabeth Moss is amazing playing a self-destructive rock star in this acclaimed indie drama.
