Movies on TV Sunday 25 August

The weekend is almost over.

Grim, right?

You’re probably gearing up to watch the return of Peaky Blinders – do check out our interviews with Cillian Murphy and show creator Steven Knight as the anticipation builds – but there are also some movies worth considering.

Here’s the best – and a couple of bad ones for the craic – on the box this evening, Sunday 25 August…

Mystery Men – SyFy – 6.40pm

Before The Boys came along to lampoon the world of superheroes, Ben Stiller and the rest of the Mystery Men did a decent – if far less x-rated – job of doing just that.

X-Men: The Last Stand – Film 4 – 6.55pm

Worth watching to see what a mess Brett Ratner made of the X-Men franchise.

Quantum of Solace – ITV2 – 8pm

Casino Royale 1.5.

Dumb and Dumber – Universal TV – 9pm

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels go on the road.

Deadpool – Film 4 – 9pm

In which Ryan Reynolds’ persistence pays off big time.

The Theory of Everything – RTÉ 2 – 9pm

Eddie Redmayne beat Michael Keaton to a Best Actor Oscar – which still feels wrong, tbh – for his turn here as the legendary Stephen Hawking.

Max Payne – SyFy – 9pm

Dundalk man John Moore delivers one for masochistic video game movie adaptation completionists.

Michael Collins – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

Liam Neeson goes full Irish revolutionary.

A Good Day to Die Hard – Channel 4 – 10pm

John Moore again, this time murdering the Die Hard series.

Street Kings – SyFy – 11pm

Back before John Wick resurrected Keanu Reeves, he was slumming it in edgy thrillers like Street Kings. Chris Evans and Forest Whitaker lend support.

The Taking of Pelham 123 – TCM – 11.05pm

The original – and best, by some distance – take on a tense train hijacking.

Train to Busan – Film 4 – 12.55am

If you prefer your train-based movies to have zombies in them, this excellent horror has you covered.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
