A great underseen action thriller is among the movies on TV tonight

Feeling in the mood for a good movie after spending the day sweating in the sun?

Well, there are plenty of solid films on the telly this Thursday night.

Here are your options.

The Evil Dead – Sky Sci-fi – 9pm

The gnarly and now classic horror that kickstarted a franchise and launched Spider-Man director Sam Raimi’s career.

I, Robot – Film4 – 9pm

Will Smith stars in this near-future set sci-fi as a cop who investigates a death for which a robot may be responsible.

Full Metal Jacket – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick directs this gritty and powerful Vietnam-war drama.

Robin and Marian – Great! Movies Classic – 9pm

Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn star in this ’70s retelling of Robin Hood.

Lucy – ITV4 – 11.05pm

This fun sci-fi action flick centres on a woman (Scarlett Johansson) forced to be a drug mule who gains superpowers after being exposed to a mysterious chemical.

Shout at the Devil – Great! Movies Classic – 11.10pm

An American colonel (Lee Marvin) and a British aristocrat (Roger Moore) set out to destroy a German battleship during World War I in this ’70s film.

Blue Steel – Film4 – 11.20pm

Our pick for tonight, this 1990 action thriller centres on a rookie cop (Jamie Lee Curtis) who becomes engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with a serial killer (Ron Silver).

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, The Hurt Locker), Blue Steel’s easy-to-root for protagonist, terrific performances and twisty script make it well worth seeking out.

The Birds – Turner Classic Movies – 11.25pm

Birds turn against mankind in this legendary horror from Alfred Hitchcock.
