Movies on TV Thursday 17 October

It’s nearly the weekend.

But not quite yet.

We can get there, though. We will get there.

In the meantime, let’s watch some movies.

Here’s the best available on Thursday 17 October…

Friday Night Lights – TCM – 9pm

The movie that inspired the beloved TV show.

Mechanic: Resurrection – Film 4 – 9pm

Unnecessary but perfectly fine action sequel in which Jason Statham kills people for money before being targeted himself.

The trailer and poster ruined the film’s most elaborate exit – a clear lift from the Hitman video game series – so if you avoided that, dig in.

The Frighteners – SyFy – 9pm

Terrific horror-comedy from the mind of Peter Jackson with Michael J. Fox as a paranormal investigator who finds that the world he’s been messing around with is all too real…

Zombieland – Comedy Central – 9pm

With the sequel hitting cinemas, there’s no better time to catch up.

The Handmaiden – Film 4 – 11pm

Brilliant slow-burn drama from the director who brought you Oldboy in which a conman targets a vast fortune only for several twists and turns to emerge.

The Crazies – SyFy – 11.10pm

Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell fight to survive in this not-bad-at-all killer virus outbreak remake of George Romero’s original.

Sudden Death – ITV4 – 11.10pm

Die Hard, if it was set in an ice hockey stadium and starred Jean-Claude Van Damme.

In support, the late Powers Boothe provides a decent villain.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
