Movies On TV Wednesday 22 September

The mid-section of the week has arrived.

And with it, a fresh batch of movies available via your TV screen.

Here’s the best around on Wednesday, 22 September…

Only the Brave – Film4 – 6.20pm

A strong cast – Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly, James Badge Dale, Andie McDowell – brings the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots; an elite crew of American firefighters, to compelling life.

Sicario 2: Soldado – Film4 – 9pm

The first Sicario is one of the best films of the last 10 years.

The second Sicario is… not. Very much not. But it’s still somewhat watchable. Maybe?

Fighting – Turner Classic Movies / TCM – 9pm

Channing Tatum plays a New York City hustler who finds himself introduced to the dangerous and corrupt world of bare-knuckle street fighting.

Terrence Howard is his guide.

Lone Survivor – ITV4 – 9pm

Our pick for this evening.

One of the most blatantly ‘America, fuck yeah!’ war films you’ll ever see finds the Navy SEAL team of Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Emilie Hirsch and Taylor Kitsch attempting to overcome extremely difficult odds when they find themselves pinned down by advancing Taliban hordes.

Based on the real-life account by Marcus Luttrell and featuring both a strong score from post-rock band Explosions in the Sky and some genuinely incredible action sequences, Lone Survivor is worth your attention should you be able to get past all of the rampant jingoism on display.

Assassination Nation – Film4 – 11.25pm

A real ‘your mileage may vary’ one here as four high school teenagers attempt to survive violent mob warfare after the horrors of social media provoke wildly over-the-top consequences for a sleepy American town.

Total Recall – ITV4 – 11.35pm

The Arnie original and thus not the Colin Farrell remake and thus the good one.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
