An underseen sci-fi gem is among the movies on TV tonight

It comes from the director of 2014’s Godzilla and Rogue One.

JOE recently compiled 18 of the best movies you can only watch on Netflix. However, if you are on the hunt for something to watch and none of these options are for you, here are the films airing on TV tonight, starting with:

Monsters – AMC UK – 7.10pm

Our pick for tonight is this 2010 sci-fi set six years after a NASA space probe crash lands in Mexico and spreads alien lifeforms, leading to much of the country being quarantined.

The movie follows a cynical journalist (Scoot McNairy in a breakthrough role) who agrees to escort a shaken American tourist (Whitney Able) through the Mexican infected zone to the safety of the US border.

Notable for being made on a budget of less than $500,000, Monsters’ lack of resources turned out to be its biggest strength, forcing debut writer-director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One, the upcoming The Creator) to focus more on the human characters at the centre of his story and their interactions – resulting in a ground-level, more realistic depiction of an alien invasion.

That being said, given Edwards’ background working in visual effects, when the movie’s extraterrestrial creatures are on screen, they look incredible.

Along with airing on TV tonight, Monsters is streaming on Prime Video right now.

Rocky II – ITV4 – 9pm

Boxers Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) face off again in the first sequel in the beloved sports franchise.

Silk Road – Film4 – 9pm

Based on true events, this 2021 crime thriller follows the rise and fall of the infamous Silk Road, the first modern darknet market.

A Star is Born – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are incredible as musicians and lovers in this Oscar-winning romantic drama.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II – Horror Xtra – 10.50pm

Another first sequel in a long-running franchise, this time for the horror series Hellraiser.

Thirteen Ghosts – Legend – 10.55pm

A family inherit a glass house that serves as a prison to several ghosts in this critically panned horror remake.

Nowhere Special – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Happy Valley’s James Norton stars in this acclaimed drama as a Northern Irish terminally ill single-father who attempts to find a new, perfect family for his young son.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – Film4  – 11.20pm

This brilliant fourth entry in the currently topical Mission: Impossible franchise boasts an incredible action set-piece set at the world’s tallest building.
