And yet we never got a sequel to this sequel…
If you’re in a movie mood this Friday evening, we’ve got some good news for you. 2022’s best movie has finally been made available to watch at home, but if that isn’t your cup of quali-tea, then here are all SEVENTEEN of the movies on your telly this evening, starting with…
Master and Commander: Far Side of the World – FilmFour – 6.20pm
Notoriously overlooked upon release, this hugely entertaining nautical action adventure fronted by Russell Crowe is definitely worth your time.
The Unforgiven – TG4 – 9pm
Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn star in this okay-ish 1960 western.
22 Jump Street – ITV2 – 9pm
Our pick for the night is 22 Jump Street, a rare example of a movie that improves upon the original. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back as the undercover cops, this time sent into college to bust a new criminal ring. With a bigger box office than 21 Jump Street, and a higher Metacritic score (71 compared to the original’s 68), we’re kind of shocked that we’re nearly a full decade on and Hollywood still hasn’t made a 23 Jump Street.
22 Jump Street is also available to stream on Prime Video in Ireland and the UK, as is 21 Jump Street, should you want to do the double bill.
Channing Tatum and Wyatt Russell are new BFFs in 22 Jump Street
The Book of Eli – FilmFour – 9pm
Denzel Washington headlines this moody, stylish, post-apocalyptic action thriller. It isn’t great, but has developed quite the cult following over the years.
The Young Offenders – RTÉ One – 9.35pm
The very funny comedy that spun-off into a successful TV comedy series. Two best friends discover a big bag of cocaine and decide to try their hands at selling it themselves. Things, unsurprisingly, don’t go according to plan.
Destination Wedding – RTÉ2 – 9.40pm
Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder star in this likeable rom-com about two guests at a wedding who both equally hate everything about the event, including the bride and groom.
Everything, Everything – BBC Three – 9.55pm
A teenage girl with a severe disease that forces her to remain indoors at all times falls in love with the boy next door. A bit of a mopey rom-dram, but bolstered by decent performances by the two leads.
The Back-Up Plan – Comedy Central Extra – 10pm
J-Lo decides to have a baby via artificial insemination, and upon getting pregnant, immediately finds the man of her dreams. But will he understand her current situation? (Spoilers: yes.)
Rambo: Last Blood – Virgin Media One – 10pm
Stallone’s final outing as Rambo sees him going up against some Mexican cartels. Its not a good movie.
Harold & Kumar Get The Munchies – MTV – 11pm
Kal Penn and John Cho are two stoner besties in this quite fun and bonkers comedy.
The Other Guys – ITV4 – 11.10pm
Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg star in this great action comedy about two overlooked cops who take it upon themselves to crack their precinct’s biggest case.
Bad Boys – FilmFour – 11.15pm
The first outing for Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is a pretty great action movie.
Vice – RTÉ One – 11.15pm
Christian Bale stars as Dick Cheney, a man with a singular influence over President Bush (played by Sam Rockwell), in this decent comedy-drama from the folks behind The Big Short.
The Mule – BBC One – 11.25pm
Clint Eastwood stars in and directs this based-on-a-true-story drama of an 90-year-old man who becomes a drug mule. Bradley Cooper, Andy Garcia and Laurence Fishburne co-star.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – Channel 4 – 12.10am
Anyone else think Ferris was the absolute worst? Just me? Alright, as you were…
Total Recall – FilmFour – 1.35am
Colin Farrell headlines this remake of Arnie’s classic action sci-fi. It isn’t nearly as good as the original, but also not nearly as bad as you might have heard.
Made of Honor – Comedy Central Extra – 4.20am
For some bizarre reason, this Michelle Monaghan/Patrick Dempsey is on in the absolute dead of night. Is it a 420 joke? If it is, I don’t get it.
