Movies & TV

25th Oct 2022

One of the greatest scary movies ever is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

There is also another tremendous horror movie to watch directly afterwards, too…

Not sure what to watch this evening? Disney+ has just added 12 very big movies to its library, but if none of those tickle your fancy, here are the movies on TV tonight, starting with:

The Day The Earth Stood Still – FilmFour – 6.45pm

Keanu Reeves plays an alien who lands on Earth that humanity is about to be completely destroyed, while Jennifer Connolly plays a scientist who might be able to stall the impending apocalypse. An okay sci-fi movie.

Scream – Sky Showcase/Sky One – 9pm

Our main pick out of the movies on TV tonight is the original (and best?) of the self-aware scary movies. From the opening scene with Drew Barrymore, all the way through to the bloodbath finale, Wes Craven takes us on a darkly funny, always-thrilling, very fresh take on the slasher film.

Unforgiven – TCM – 9pm

Clint Eastwood’s brilliant dismantling of the Western genre is ALWAYS on, in case you’re the last person left alive who hasn’t seen it?

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation – FilmFour – 9pm

One of the best of the Tom Cruise spy movies has him pair up with Rebecca Ferguson’s equally adept double agent, as they attempt to dismantle a secret organisation of terrorists. Bike chases, underwater heists and fights in opera houses ensue.

Dumb and Dumber To – Comedy Central – 9pm

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels both deserved better than this truly awful sequel.

The Rider – FilmFour – 11.30pm

A powerful and brilliant drama (97% on Rotten Tomatoes) about a rodeo rider who refuses to give up horse riding after an accident leaves him with brain damage.

The Babadook – BBC Two – 12am

A nerve-wracking horror involving a mother and her young son, both grieving the recent loss of a loved one, who find themselves being tormented by a demon unleashed from a children’s book.

40 Days and 40 Nights – Comedy Central Extra – 12am

After a very rough break-up, a young man (Josh Hartnett) attempts to go without any sex for 40 days and 40 nights, only for him to immediately meet the love of his life (Shannon Sossamon).

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
