A truly spooky gothic horror is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

There are also comedies, action epics and modern dramas to choose from if scary movies aren’t your bag.

Not sure what to watch tonight?

Today is the 10 year anniversary of one of the greatest action movies ever made, so you can (re)visit that?

Or if not, these are the movies on TV this evening to choose from…

Daddy’s Home 2 – FilmFour – 7pm

Warring fathers Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg get further spanners thrown into the works when their own fathers (John Lithgow, Mel Gibson) join them for Christmas celebrations.

War – TCM – 9pm

It is Jason Statham versus Jet Li in this bad (13% on Rotten Tomatoes) action thriller.

Jumanji: The Next Level – FilmFour – 9pm

The sequel to the reboot sees The Rock, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart drawn back into the world of Jumanji, with Danny DeVito and Awkwafina joining the already stacked cast.

Bring It On – Comedy Central Extra – 10pm

The much-loved teen comedy centred around a group of cheerleaders stars Kirsten Dunst, Gabrielle Union and Eliza Dushku.

The Orphanage – FilmFour – 11.25pm

Our pick for the night is this truly creepy gothic horror, executive produced by Guillermo Del Toro and directed by J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, The Impossible).

With happy memories of growing up in an orphanage, a woman convinces her husband to buy the building as their new home. But before long, her own adopted son goes missing, and spirits that reside within the house are either trying to help the woman find him, or are warning about who might have taken him…

Westworld – TCM – 1.15am

The movie that the hit HBO series is based on, and there’s also a big influence on The Terminator, which would arrive a few years later. Rich tourists pay to take part in robot-run Wild Wild West, and it all is going really well (for the humans, anyways), until the robots achieve sentience and begin fighting back.

Picnic at Hanging Rock – FilmFour – 1.35am

A highly acclaimed and quite creepy 1975 drama based on the true story of a teacher and a group of students who suddenly go missing during a summer excursion.

Men, Women & Children – Channel 4 – 2am

An eclectic cast (Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, Ansel Elgort, Judy Greer, Kaitlyn Dever and Timothée Chalamet) star in this drama about how the internet and social media has impacted modern families. 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, just FYI.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
