Netflix has just added all three seasons of Mr. Mercedes, a gripping and tense thriller series based on a trilogy of novels by legendary author Stephen King.
Produced by King and adapted for the screen by the incredibly prolific David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, Presumed Innocent), the show stars Irish Oscar-nominee Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin).
He plays Bill Hodges, a retired cop in an Ohio town haunted by an unsolved case. This was when a mysterious man, later dubbed Mr. Mercedes, drove a stolen Mercedes through a line of job-seekers at a local job fair, claiming the lives of 16 people.
When the killer (Harry Treadaway, Penny Dreadful), hell-bent on leaving his mark on the world, begins taunting Hodges through a series of lurid letters and emails, a dangerous cat-and-mouse game ensues.
Also featuring amongst its main cast Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men), Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight), Justine Lupe (Succession), Kelly Lynch (Road House) and Mary Louise Parker (Red), Mr. Mercedes ran for three seasons between 2017 and 2019 on the now-defunct US channel Audience.
Perhaps because it aired on a less popular network, the show never quite became a breakout hit, despite earning very positive reviews across its 30 episodes.
Holding an impressive 91% average Rotten Tomatoes score, we'd also recommend the series.
King's take on a detective story is gloriously inventive and twisted, while Gleeson and Treadaway are both excellent as adversaries on a collision course.
Even more impressively, the show manages to find some genuine humour amidst all its darkness, through the curmudgeonly Hodges' interactions with the people in his life.
You can read a sample of some other positive reviews for Mr. Mercedes right here:
AV Club: "Thanks to these capable actors, the stately buildup provided by the first half of this series makes the wait for the payoff worth it."
Hollywood Reporter: "Mr. Mercedes is a fine example of something that has been less frequent over the years -- an effective Stephen King adaptation carried by strong performances and smart writing choices."
NPR: "David Kelly and Stephen King have been entertaining the masses for many decades now, yet in Mr. Mercedes, they're both doing some of their best work in years."
RogerEbert.com: "This is an all-star crew operating at near the peak of their abilities. It makes for a tight, terrifying story of a retired cop and the madman who got away but won't go away."
All three 10-episode seasons of the series are streaming on Netflix in Ireland and the UK right now.
