Mrs Brown’s Boys voted the best sitcom of the century

Rosanna Cooney

It’s great to see Irish talent being recognised.

Mrs Brown’s Boys was voted number 1 in the online poll conducted by Radio Times. The show is a co-production between RTÉ and BBC.

Ricky Gervais’ The Office came second in the poll.

The triumph of Mrs Brown’s Boys has long puzzled critics. It has been a frolicking success with viewers but it seems those charged with discerning the quality of good television still don’t get it.

Mrs Brown’s Boys has been massively popular in the UK and it aired to an audience of 4.5million in a special live broadcast last month.

Creator and star of the show Brendan O’Carroll said the win highlighted the show’s continued popularity in the face of poor reviews.

Speaking to The Guardian he said: “It vindicates the fans’ belief in the show. They have kept us on the air – it certainly wasn’t the reviewers”.

Lesson firmly learnt, never trust the critics. Unless it’s us, always trust us.
