They’ve added a few gems to their library.

If you’re back in work, we feel your pain. If you’re still on your Christmas holiday, don’t talk to us.

Actually, do talk to us, we need the company to get us through these strange times when nobody knows what day it is, or why today feels like the Mondayest Monday that was ever Mondayd – despite the fact it’s Thursday.

Anyway, the good people at Netflix are working too and they’ve added a few gems to their library over the last few days.

Here’s the pick of what’s new…

Breakdown

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 80%

Plot: The excellent thriller follows an ordinary man’s struggle to locate his beloved wife, who simply vanished after a car breakdown led her to hitch a ride with a friendly trucker who later denies ever having seen her.

Watch it because: It’s one of the most underrated thrillers from the ’90s. Plus it has Kurt Russell and he makes everything better.

Coming to America

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 67% (Pffft, a scandal)

Plot: An extremely pampered African prince travels to Queens, New York, and goes undercover to find a wife that he can respect for her intelligence and will.

Watch it because: We could wax lyrical about the brilliance of Eddie Murphy’s fish out of water comedy but we’ll just say one name, Randy Watson. A classic.

True Romance

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%

Plot: In Detroit, a lonely pop culture geek marries a call girl, steals cocaine from her pimp, and tries to sell it in Hollywood. Meanwhile, the owners of the cocaine, the Mob, track them down in an attempt to reclaim it.

Watch it because: It’s the best film that Tarantino wrote but never directed. The cast in this is incredible and it might…MIGHT…feature the best Brad Pitt performance.

Friday Night Lights

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%

Plot: Based on H.G. Bissinger’s book, which profiled the economically depressed town of Odessa, Texas and their heroic high school football team, The Permian High Panthers.

Watch it because: It’s one of the finest sports films ever made and boasts a brillaint soundtrack by Explosions in the Sky.

The Terminal

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 61%

Plot: An Eastern European tourist unexpectedly finds himself stranded in JFK airport, and must take up temporary residence there.

Watch it because: Tom Hanks is effortlessly-charming, the supporting cast are great – we’ll always associate this film with the line “Do you have an appointment?” – and it’s just a real heartwarming film.

Fighting With My Family

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%

Plot: A former wrestler and his family make a living performing at small venues around the country while his kids dream of joining World Wrestling Entertainment.

Watch it because: Even if you don’t like wrestling, there’s enough laughs, drama, and heart in this to win you over. It uses all the classic underdog sporting tropes and still feels fresh. One of 2019’s real hidden gems and the incredibly talented Florence Pugh is always worth watching.

Long Shot

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 81%

Plot: Journalist Fred Flarsky reunites with his childhood crush, Charlotte Field, now one of the most influential women in the world. As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte hires Fred as her speechwriter and sparks fly.

Watch it because: It’s the best rom-com that we’ve seen in a long, long time. Theron and Rogen have great chemistry and it’s on the money in terms of how it flips cliches and stereotypes too.

Other notable (relatively) new additions: Along Came Polly, Christine, Dogtown and Z Boys, Groundhog Day, John Wick 3, Lost in Translation, Mean Machine, Mid ’90s, Sense and Sensibility, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, The Raid 2, Videodrome.
