Netflix is bringing Sabrina the Teenage Witch back – but not as you know her

Will there be a talking cat?

If you switched on any children’s TV channel in the ’90s, chances are you’d have been met with the sight of Melissa Joan Hart.

Having cut her teeth as the lead on Clarissa Explains It All, the New York actor is probably best remembered for her star turn on Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

The kooky sitcom ran for seven seasons, featuring all sorts of wholesome misadventures as Sabrina Spellman attempted to juggle teen troubles with the whole ‘being a witch’ thing. Throw in a wise-cracking cat and the whole thing was very zany indeed.

Now, Netflix is set to resurrect the beloved character, albeit in a much darker fashion. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant has green-lit a two-season, 20-episode run based on the Archie Comics graphic novel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

As that title might suggest, we’re dealing with a very different witch, with horror, the occult and witchcraft high on the agenda.

Shooting is scheduled for early 2018 and though there’s no release date or cast details as of yet, comparisons are already being drawn with the likes of The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby.

So, don’t expect a sass-talking cat, essentially.
