WATCH: This disturbing new Scandinavian show on Netflix looks thrilling & dark as f*ck

Umbrellas at the ready…

Netflix has been on something of a winning streak with original sci-fi dramas recently with the latest series of Black Mirror and the Natalie Portman-starring Annihilation having wowed and terrified audiences for their highly imaginative storytelling.

Now, just in case extra-terrestrials and technology didn’t frighten you enough, a new Scandinavian drama is set to come out, which should make you carry an umbrella on your person at all times.

The Rain is the first original Danish series to come to Netflix, and it tells the story of an apocalyptic virus that is carried by rain.

Having wiped out almost all human life in Scandinavia, the only survivors are those who managed to seek refuge indoors before the initial rains fell. Picking up six years after this time, The Rain follows two Danish siblings who emerge from a bunker to find most all of civilization gone.

Joining up with a group of survivors, they set out on a journey to find any signs of life. However, while they constantly live in fear of the rain falling again, another more immediate threat is that of humans themselves, as the lack of law changes everyone’s behaviour.

Created by Jannik Tai Mosholt (Borgen, Rita), Esben Toft Jacobsen (The Great Bear) and Christian Potalivo (Dicte), the trailer for The Rain looks nail-bitingly tense and well-worth seeking out.

One thing’s for sure: You won’t be leaving the house once it drops. It just remains to be seen whether that’s because you get caught up on a binge or you develop an outright fear of bad weather.

The Rain comes out on 4 May 2018.
