True crime fans, your weekend is sorted.
Netflix is heading to Spain for its latest original documentary series, which will investigate The Alcàsser Murders.
The four-part true crime documentary will analyse one of the most gruesome and controversial crimes in Spanish history – a triple murder in 1992 that shook the foundations of Spanish society and crossed borders, not only due to its brutality but also because of how the media portrayed and reported on the incident.
In 1992 three teenagers, Miriam García Iborra, Antonia “Toñi” Gómez Rodríguez and Desirée Hernández Folch, were brutally murdered in Alcàsser, Valencia – a crime that, even after 25 years, is still unresolved.
The three girls went missing whilst hitchhiking on the way to a club in the Valencia region of Spain. They were dropped off at a gas station by a couple and then picked up by another car.
The girls’ bodies were found in January 1993, showing signs of having been kidnapped, tortured and raped, before being murdered. The murders are renowned as one of the most brutal in Spanish history.
The passing of time, instead of shedding light on this case, has triggered a whole series of rumours in a case that a Spanish judge has described as a “journey to horror” that’s brimming with controversy and numerous loose ends.
Ramón Campos, an executive producer on the series, adds: “Our intention is that this will be the ultimate documentary about one of the cases that shocked Spanish society for years. We will tell the stories of all people involved in an effort to try and clarify once and for all the truth of what happened that dreadful November 1992 in Alcàsser. We will offer everyone the opportunity to share their truth.”
With new interviews and analysis, it’s also Netflix’s first Spanish original documentary.
