Netflix’s gripping new gangster drama looks like Narcos meets the Mafia

Paul Moore

Mafia

For anyone that loves gangster films.

When it comes to depicting the world of organised crime, there’s no denying that foreign filmmakers have been making better features in the last decade.

Narcos, Gomorrah, Suburra, Romanzo Criminale, A Prophet.

They’re all excellent and in The Ruthless, were going back to the hedonistic lifestyle of the 1980s in Milan and the infamous ‘Ndrangheta Mafia.

Fans of John Wick: Chapter will be very familiar with the face of Riccardo Scamarcio – he played Santino D’Antonio in the beloved franchise – and he’s not venturing far from that role in his new film.

As for the plot, we’re told that “1980s Milan is an economic boom-town, and ‘Santo Russo’ (Riccardo Scamarcio) begins to rise to prominence on a wave of crime and excess. The rebellious teen grows up to become one of Milan’s most ambitious criminals during the golden years of the ‘Ndrangheta Mafia’.

Having seen the trailer, we got a strong Narcos vibe due to to sheer amount of drug-running that’s going on and the story arc of a criminal that’s trying to pass themselves off as a legitimate businessman is reminiscent of Scarface and Scorsese’s work.

The Ruthless is available to watch on Netflix from 19 April.

Take a look at what’s in store.
