New animation from makers of Into the Spider-Verse hitting Netflix next month

This looks very adorable and funny.

One of the biggest and best surprises in recent movie history was 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

While on paper it sounded like the type of animated superhero flick that often goes straight-to-DVD, it turned out to be one of the best superhero films ever made thanks to its beautiful animation, smart premise and the love it clearly had for its iconic characters.

As such, we’re expecting big things from The Mitchells vs. the Machines, an animated movie heading to Netflix next month from some of the same team behind Spider-Verse.

The action-comedy centres on creative outsider Katie (Abbi Jacobson, Broad City), who is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home.

However, her nature-loving dad (Danny McBride, Eastbound & Down) insists on having the whole family drive her to her new college as part of one last awkward road trip.

Just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of a robot uprising, where everything from smartphones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are deployed to capture every human on the planet.

Produced by Spider-Verse’s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the voice cast for The Mitchells vs. the Machines also includes Eric Andre, Maya Rudolph and Olivia Colman.

Last year – when it was titled Connected and was set for a theatrical release – a terrific trailer for the film was posted online, suggesting it boasted the same vibrant animation, witty gags and heart that made Spider-Verse a classic.

Following Covid-19 related delays, Netflix has revealed in a new clip that the movie will hit their streaming service on 30 April and we can’t wait.
