7 must-watch movies coming to Irish cinemas in May

Rory Cashin

Superheroes, award-winning Irish dramas, horror, mind-bending sci-fi and a LOOOOONG awaited sequel.

We’re heading into May, which means we’re officially heading into Summer Blockbuster Season.

But it isn’t all explosions and sky lasers (although there are also plenty of explosions and sky lasers), so if you’re looking for something different from your cinema visit in May, there will be plenty of those on offer, too.

Here are some of the biggest releases to keep an eye out for…

DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS – 5 May

Directly following on from the events of WandaVision, What If…?, Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) discovers that all his tinkering with the parallel realities is about to blow up in his face, in the worst way imaginable. Check out our chat with Benedict Cumberbatch himself right here:

AN CAILÍN CIÚIN – 13 May

A young girl is sent away from her dysfunctional family home to live with some of her mother’s relatives for the summer. While their relationship is frosty to begin with, they actually start to develop their own, unique family dynamic, but before long the young girl discovers something about her own family that is liable to change everything.

FIRESTARTER – 13 May

An adaptation of the hit Stephen King horror novel, it tells the story of a father (Zac Efron) who is trying to hide his daughter from shady government agents. They want her because she has a unique pyrotechnic ability, one that she has just barely managed to keep under control, but as she gets older that power is getting more and more difficult to keep a lid on.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE – 20 May

The best-reviewed movie of the decade! Michelle Yeoh plays an office worker who gets inexplicably drawn into a multidimensional battle for survival. Check out the trailer below and tell us it doesn’t look mind-blowingly awesome!

THE INNOCENTS – 20 May

Continuing in the vein of “if you’re looking for something completely different”, this Nordic chiller sees a group of young kids from a series of high-rise housing developments become close friends, only to discover that a number of them have been gifted with supernatural powers. And not all of them plan on using them for good…

BOB’S BURGERS: THE MOVIE – 27 May

After 12 seasons (and counting) of the much-loved show so far, Bob and his family are finally hitting the big screen. When a sinkhole suddenly opens up at their burger restaurant’s entrance, they must try to save their business and also get to the bottom of a mystery that could be the answer to all of their problems.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK – 27 May

36 years after the original, Tom Cruise returns with his need for speed seemingly not diminished in any way. He’s been chosen to train some of the best new recruits for some highly dangerous missions. The action looks incredible, and the behind-the-scenes look below shows off how real some of it actually was for the cast and crew.
