Cartoon Saloon feature The Breadwinner has been awarded Best Animation by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association; usually a decent indicator of success at the upcoming Academy Awards. It's a pretty major coup for the Kilkenny-based animation studio, given that their film was viewed as an underdog and beat out Pixar's highly-fancied Coco to the honour. Following on from excellent work with Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells - both previously nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars - The Breadwinner tells the story of Parvana, a young girl who must sacrifice everything she knows in order to save her family. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQBQw-Bh1pg Clip via Cartoon Saloon The LA Film Critics made it official during their live-tweeting of the awards: https://twitter.com/LAFilmCritics/status/937439264903610368 The Irish-Canadian-Luxembourgian venture is directed by Nora Twomey, and counts Angelina Jolie among its producers.
