Respect

Jennifer Hudson is The Queen of Soul. Essential for anyone that loves musicals.

While the likes of Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury) and Angela Bassett (Tina Turner) gave incredible performances in their respective biopics of famous artists, one thing was missing.

The live recordings.

Well, that won’t be an issue in Respect, the new biopic of Aretha Franklin.

Truth be told, given the fact that ‘The Queen of Soul’ has one of the most powerful and unique voices in the history of music, it’s one hell of a challenge for Jennifer Hudson in the starring role.

However, the Grammy Award-winning singer has already proven her chops in the likes of Dreamgirls, Sing, and Cats. Hell, she even won an Oscar for her breakthrough role in Dreamgirls.

Well, having seen the teaser trailer for Respect, it looks like she has absolutely nailed Franklin’s iconic voice too.

As for the plot, the official synopsis states the film will follow “the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, Respect is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.”

In addition to Hudson, the cast includes Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Tate Donovan, Heather Headley, Skye Dakota Turner, and Mary J. Blige.

It’s time to get some R-E-S-P-E-C-T when the film is released on 21 August.

Take a look at what’s in store.
