One of 2021’s most overlooked movies and 7 more movies and shows to watch this week

Rory Cashin

It is the season of giving… recommendations of new movies and shows to watch!

We’ve yet another week of BIG releases, both in cinemas and to watch at home, so how do you know which ones you should watch and which ones you should avoid?

That is exactly what you’ll find in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which can be watched in full below, or you can skip to the cinema reviews (4:30), home entertainment recommendations (8:35), and classic re-watches (15:00).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 3 December…

RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY

The latest big screen outing for the undead horror franchise attempts to adapt the story of the first three games in one go, filled with many of the famous characters from the series including Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy. Check out our full review here.

We chatted to some of the cast members of the new movie, including Robbie Amell, Avan Jogia and Tom Hopper, as well as Kaya Scodelario, and you can check out that interview in full right here:

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

THE LAST DUEL

Ridley Scott’s dark period epic was probably a bit too heavy and dark for cinema going audiences in the middle of a pandemic, but home viewing might be the perfect time for this slept-on gem to be re-evaluated. Jodie Comer, Adam Driver, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck star in a story of betrayal and assault between friends and family.

The Last Duel is available to watch on Disney+ right now.

DEVS

From the sci-fi mind behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, Sunshine and 28 Days Later, this mystery takes place at the centre of a tech company run by a reclusive genius (Nick Offerman), and the circumstances surrounding the death of one of his employees.

All episodes from the first season are available to watch on Disney+.

CHUCKY

The first Child’s Play movie arrived over three decades ago, and he has remained a cornerstone of horror ever since. In his first TV series, he takes his particular brand of murderous mayhem to a sleepy town that starts to turn on itself when the bodies begin pilling up.

All episodes from the first season are available to watch on NOW.

THE POWER OF THE DOG

At the time of writing, there are currently two frontrunners for the Best Picture Oscar: Belfast and The Power of the Dog. Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee star in this dark, gritty western.

The Power of the Dog is available to watch on Netflix.

GODZILLA VS KONG

It is a big lizard and a big ape baiting lumps out of each other. What more could you want? We chatted to some of the cast of the blockbuster, and you can watch that interview below.

Godzilla VS Kong is available to watch on NOW this weekend.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section, with Rory and Eoghan each picking a movie for you to enjoy at home this weekend, and putting it to a public vote to decide which is the better pick…

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – KISS KISS BANG BANG

Since we’re officially in December now, time for some Christmas movies! This hilarious mystery features Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer and scene-stealing Michelle Monaghan in the depths of a Hollywood-set murder plot.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is available to watch on Prime Video.

Eoghan’s Pick – MAGIC MIKE

To celebrate Channing Tatum’s recent announcement that the third and final Magic Mike movie is on the way, why not go back to the fantastic original. Clothing optional, we guess?

Magic Mike is available to watch on Netflix right now.
