What will you be watching?

Stuck for something to watch this Saturday evening? Not to worry as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies airing on TV tonight.

Below are our picks for this evening.

Deadpool – Film Four – 9pm

A wisecracking mercenary (Ryan Reynolds) gets experimented on and sets out to track down the man responsible.

It’s genuinely hard to think of better casting in recent years than Reynolds as the fast-talking, fourth-wall-breaking “merc with a mouth”.

Mamma Mia! – RTÉ One – 9.40pm

In this jukebox musical based on ABBA songs, young bride-to-be (Amanda Seyfried) invites three men (Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgård) to her upcoming wedding, each one with the possibility of being her father.

Also starring Meryl Streep, the movie is just great actors singing ABBA songs on a gorgeous Greek island – what’s not to like?

The Program – TG4 – 10pm

One for sports fans, The Program tells the true story of an Irish sports journalist (Chris O’Dowd) who becomes convinced that Lance Armstrong’s performances during the Tour de France victories are fueled by banned substances.

With this conviction, he starts hunting for evidence that will expose Armstrong (played by Ben Foster).

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – Channel 4 – 10.10pm

The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his new team to go rogue to clear their organisation’s name.

While Fallout is my personal favourite entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Ghost Protocol is a close second. This is thanks to the playful direction of Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and some stellar action-set pieces, including one that takes place on the tallest building in the world – the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Upgrade – Film Four – 11.10pm

Our pick for the night, Upgrade is set in the near-future where technology controls nearly all aspects of life. When Grey (Logan Marshall-Green), a self-labeled technophobe, is left paralysed after a mugging, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant.

Feeling like a cross between John Wick and an episode of Black Mirror, what elevates Upgrade is its impressive world-building, breathless action sequences and timely themes, as well as a multi-layered lead performance by Marshall-Green.

The Lodgers – RTÉ One – 11.45pm

A family curse confines a set of orphaned twins to their home, in punishment for their ancestors’ sins. Bound to the rules of a haunting childhood lullaby, the twins must never let any outsiders inside the house.

This Irish horror’s thick gothic vibes and great supporting cast including Deirdre O’Kane and Moe Dunford make it worth a watch.

Pride – RTÉ Two – 11.50pm

This historical comedy-drama centres on a group of UK gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the British miners’ strike in 1984.

Boasting a big ensemble cast including Andrew Scott, Bill Nighy, George MacKay and Paddy Considine, this feel-good film earned rave reviews upon release in 2014. With Dublin Pride ongoing, what better time to check it out.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
