End of an era.

Savoy

Terrible news for cinema lovers in Dublin.

The iconic Screen 1 at Dublin’s Savoy cinema is to close and be replaced by five smaller screens, according to The Times: Ireland Edition.

Currently holding 760 seats in an auditorium that regularly hosts premieres of major worldwide film releases, the screen will close having played to audiences since 1929.

While it is not yet known when the screen will close and work will begin on dividing it up, a number of planned events have reportedly been cancelled or moved.

Bookings for the Star Wars: The Last Jedi – which opens on 15 December – are not being taken.
