One of Ireland’s greatest ever comedy sketches is one year old today

Kate Demolder

”Oisín, mate. Do you want a soft drink? Coola boola.”

Unless you spent most of last year hidden under a rock, you’ll have heard of the incomparably funny Tony Cantwell. Tony is an Irish comedian, famed for his uncanny impressions and ability to mimic just about anyone.

Uploading videos weekly on his Facebook page Tony Cantwell Comedy, Cantwell has successfully created, developed and performed several characters for the masses, each one tuned in to the particular nuances associated with certain members of Irish society. These are characters we didn’t even realise that we all have in common, so good are his portrayals.

You’ve got Your Ma’s mate:

The lovely Gráinne:

And, of course, the act that made him famous, the overenthusiastic teacher from Clongowes. Somehow he performs this in such a way that you don’t actually have to have gone to the Jesuit boarding school to appreciate it.

For those of you who haven’t seen this, just sit back and enjoy. Oh, and be warned – you’ll never be able to hear the words ‘soft drink’ without thinking of this ever again.

Happy anniversary, Ploon!
