This year’s Oscar nominations have been announced, and the blockbusters did surprisingly well

And so begins the build up to the biggest night in the movie fan’s calendar…

The nominations ceremony kicked off with a lovely video of people recording their reactions at the winners, intercut with winners through the decades, proving the emotional power that a nomination and win can still have for those involved in cinema.

Despite airing at 5.20am on the Pacific Coast, Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish and Planet Of The Apes’ Andy Serkis shared the co-hosting duties to great effect (Haddish on the Best Short Film nominations: “That proved that size doesn’t matter!”).

Throughout the nominations, mini-videos featuring Priyanka Chopra, Rosario Dawson, Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Molly Shannon, Rebel Wilson and Michelle Yeoh played out to show off the specific nomination sections they were a part of, all to great effect.

JOE’s favourite movie of 2017 Get Out did fantastically well, landing some high profile nominations like Best Picture, Actor, Director and Screenplay. Logan got a lovely surprise nomination for Best Screenplay also, while Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049 both cleaned up with a lot of technical nominations.

Here are the nominations in full:

The 90th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday 4 March.
