Indeed, there will be huge Irish interest in the show given our country’s unprecedented presence at the awards.

For one, The Banshees of Inisherin is up for nine Oscars, including in the Best Picture category – where it will face off against All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, Tár, Triangle of Sadness, Top Gun: Maverick and Women Talking.

Amongst the Banshees nominations is Colin Farrell for Best Actor, while his co-stars Barry Keoghan and Brendan Gleeson are nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category and Kerry Condon is up for Best Supporting Actress.

In the Best Actor category, Farrell will also face off against Kildare’s own Paul Mescal for his breakthrough film role in the acclaimed indie drama Aftersun, along with Austin Butler (Elvis), Bill Nighy (Living) and Brendan Fraser (The Whale).

On top of all this, the Irish language drama An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) earned a nod in the Best International Feature Film category but will have to defeat All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), Argentina, 1985 (Argentina), Close (Belgium) and EO (Poland) to take home a trophy.
