The ultimate Friday night film and 6 more movies and shows to watch this week

Rory Cashin

Action, comedy, thriller… they’re all on the viewing menu this week!

We are now in Week 37 of January, and more in need of distractions than ever.

That is exactly what you’ll find in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which can be watched in full below, or you can skip to the cinema reviews (5:45), home entertainment recommendations (12:19), and classic re-watches (18:40).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 21 January.

NIGHTMARE ALLEY

Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Toni Collette, Ron Perlman and David Strathairn star in Guillermo Del Toro’s dark, sexy, violent psychological thriller about a fake psychic with a shady past trying to run the ultimate con.

A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN

Denzel Washington directs this romantic drama about a soldier (Michael B. Jordan) who keeps a journal of advice for his infant son during his deployment to Iraq, and the journalist (Chante Adams) who wants to write about his unique story for The New York Times.

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

OZARK SEASON FOUR: PART ONE

The beginning of the end for the Byrdes. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney find themselves on the brink of all-out war with feuding drug cartels, increasingly unsure of who they can trust or if there is any safe way out.

Part One (aka the first seven episodes) of Season Four of Ozark will arrive on Netflix on Friday, 21 January, with the second half arriving later in 2022.

QUEENS

Four women in their 40s (including famous performers Brandy and Eve) reunite to reform their ’90s girl group Nasty Bitches, in an attempt to recapture some of that magic (and re-earn some of that money!) from their prime.

100% on Rotten Tomatoes, apparently!

All episodes of the first season of Queens are available on Disney+ from Wednesday, 19 January.

NOBODY

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk (who we interview below) headlines this John Wick-esque action thriller about a seemingly quiet husband and father who is forced to return to his life of violent crime following a break-in at his home. One of the best Friday Night Movies of recent years.

Nobody is available to watch on NOW from Friday, 21 January.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section, with Rory and Eoghan each picking a movie for you to enjoy at home this weekend, and putting it to a public vote to decide which is the better pick…

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

A new addition to home streaming this week, this old-school action-adventure movie fronted by Russell Crowe is consistently ranked as one of the most overlooked blockbusters in cinema history.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is available to watch on Disney+ right now.

Eoghan’s Pick – COOL RUNNINGS

To celebrate the news that a Jamaican bobsleigh team has officially qualified for the Winter Olympics for the first time in decades, why not revisit this iconic feel-good comedy.

Cool Runnings is available to watch on Disney+ right now.

Clips via Netflix, ABC, Searchlight Pictures, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Studios & Disney
