Director of the Oscar-winning film Parasite, Bong Joon-ho has said that he would like to add a musical to the iconic Alien franchise.
Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror classic spawned one of the most successful and popular franchises in cinema.
The series' last instalment, Romulus, was released last year, with a Disney+ show, Alien: Earth, set to be released this summer.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Bong joked that he would like to make his own stamp on the franchise.
Following the monumental success of 2019's Parasite, the South Korean director was tipped to direct blockbusters from well-established franchises like Star Wars.
He was never interested in such work, bar one franchise, saying: “I’m not drawn to franchise films, but I did think at one point that I would like to do an ‘Alien’ film."
The 55-year-old added dryly: "An 'Alien' musical."
Fans of the series have reacted to the somewhat absurd idea with mixed feelings.
One person wrote on X quite plainly: "This might be the worst idea. Congratulations."
Another fan was intrigued by the series' iconic villain bursting into song, saying: "Xenomorphs breaking into song mid-chestburst? bong joon ho might be onto something insane."
Somebody else was adamant about keeping him away from the series, writing: "Bong Joon Ho can do the musical, over the dead bodies of the entire fandom!"
Several fans compared his idea to the Joker sequel, which tanked at the box office and was panned by fans and critics.
Joker: Folie à Deux saw Joaquin Phoenix reprise his Oscar-winning role as the infamous Batman villain, alongside Lady Gaga who played Harley Quinn.
In a drastic change of style from the first movie, the sequel was a musical which did not go down well with fans.
Responding to Bong's suggested Alien movie, one fan wrote: "He is probably trolling after watching Joker 2."
Bong Joon-ho's latest film Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, is out in cinemas on March 7th.
