The Irish actor and the creators of the show released a joint statement on the advert.
The full team behind Peaky Blinders has come out swinging this week, after it was brought to their attention that footage from their show was used in an anti-LGBTQ+ advert in America.
Ron DeSantis – 2024 Presidential hopeful and Republican (although that shouldn’t be a surprise) party member – took to Twitter on June 30 – aka the very last day of Pride month – to blast political opponent Donald Trump for being too pro-LGBTQ+.
Throughout the video, some very random imagery is used, including Brad Pitt in Troy, Christian Bale in American Psycho, and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street, as well as Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders.

In response this week, the team behind Peaky Blinders took to their Twitter account to confirm that they did not give permission for this imagery usage, and did not support the narrative within the video:
“On behalf of the partners of Peaky Blinders – [show creator] Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions, and Banijay Rights – we confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby’s character used within the video posted by Ron DeDantis’ campaign was obtained without permission or official license. We do not support nor endorse the video’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner.”
