People are calling last night’s episode of Derry Girls the best one yet

“They’ve been playing the same three songs since 1795. What do they need to rehearse for?”

Channel 4’s latest comedy, Derry Girls, follows 16-year-old Erin Quinn (played by Saoirse Monica Jackson) as she comes of age during the later years of the Troubles.

Since its premiere some five weeks ago, the show has experienced roaring success with Irish viewers due to its witty one-liners and sensational casting.

Thursday, 1 February, saw episode five of season one being aired on Channel 4 – with seasoned telly fans going as far as calling the episode the programme’s “best yet.”

The sitcom was commissioned for a second series by Channel 4 following the huge response to the series’ first episode; however, naysayers have expressed their belief that the show dipped in quality in episodes two and four.

However, the show’s creator Lisa McGee has had the last laugh, as the show’s second last episode of the season is currently being lauded as the best yet.

Derry Girls’ fifth episode takes place on 12 July and the Quinn family are rushing to get out of Derry before the Orange Parades start.

Aunt Sarah’s tarot cards predict a disaster for this trip (and she’s psychic, she got a certificate) and, for once, she might be right.

And, as always, the 24-minute-episode is full of incredible gags.

In related Derry Girls news, it was also announced during the week that none other than Nadine Coyle, otherwise known as Queen Nadine, is set for a role in the next series of the Channel 4 sitcom.

“Yes I’m going to speak to the writer about that. I’m going to call Lisa today actually, we’re sorting something out for the next series,” Nadine told The Star earlier this week.

The Girls Aloud star added that the school in Derry Girls is actually based on her own school, so she’s got a good few fairly specific memories about the place.
