Dave Hanratty

Place Beyond the Pines

Monday Movie Madness.

It’s Monday, so you know what that means.

Here’s the most intriguing movie options for you on this Monday, 20 June…

Project Almanac – Film4 – 6.40pm

Sci-fi thriller in which a teenager builds a time machine.

Men In Black II – Sky Showcase – 8pm

The second one.

Lethal Weapon 3 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Riggs and Murtagh get busted down to beat cop status, only to find themselves caught up in another vast criminal conspiracy that still affords to opportunity to crack some jokes.

Runaway Bride – RTÉ 2 – 9pm

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere try and recapture the ol’ magic in this marriage-themed rom-com.

Bad Samaritan – Horror Channel – 9pm

Robert Sheehan breaks into David Tenant’s house, which turns out not to be a great idea.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – Film4 – 9pm

The first Jack Reacher, despite attracting some outrage from fans of Lee Child’s book series who didn’t like the fact that Tom Cruise isn’t seven feet tall, is actually very good and arguably quite underrated.

Cruise is excellent, the opening sequence is brilliant, the supporting cast are great and the film feels like a throwback thriller that is confidently delivered by director Christopher McQuarrie.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, however… yeah it very much earns its subtitle. Here is a much more generic adventure for Reacher, one that saddles him with a kid character and a fairly unexciting subplot about military-based corruption.

It’s not a total disaster but it feels ‘straight to video’ and the kind of thing Cruise shouldn’t really be bothering with.

Boy Erased – TG4 – 9.30pm

A preacher’s son is forced to participate in a church-supported gay conversion programme after being outed to his parents. Nicole Kidman leads the cast.

The Place Beyond The Pines – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Told from three different perspectives, this drama looks at the generational impact that crime and conflict can have on individuals. A hell of a cast includes Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Mahershala Ali, Ben Mendelsohn, Dane DeHaan and the late Ray Liotta.

Split – Film4 – 11.20pm

James McAvoy shows off his range and then some in M. Night Shyamalan’s split-personality chiller.

Ocean’s Twelve – Turner Classic Movies – 11.25pm

The gang goes to Europe, where one of them is mistaken for Julia Roberts.

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth – Horror Channel – 12.40am

The one where Pinhead basically became a poor Freddy Krueger rip-off.

Downsizing – Channel 4 – 1.55am

Matt Damon literally shrinks his life down to size in a hit-and-miss dramedy that is on at 2am for some reason.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
