Christopher Abbott in Possessor, our pick for tonight

Possessor – Film4 – 1.40am
At last, we get to our pick for tonight – this 2020 sci-fi horror-thriller from writer-director Brandon Cronenberg (Infinity Pool), son of legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg.

Andrea Riseborough stars in Possessor as Tasya Vos, an assassin under mental strain who is able, through technology, to inhabit other people’s bodies to carry out killings.

However, when Vos is tasked with possessing Colin Tate (Christopher Abbott) – the fiancé of a wealthy CEO’s daughter – to perform a hit, the pair find themselves wrestling for control of the body.

Co-starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sean Bean and Tuppence Middleton, Possessor benefits from a great premise, stunning performances and creepy, grotesque visuals.

In fact, it is these elements – as well as the way Cronenberg uses sci-fi to probe issues like technological surveillance and the idea of “work-life balance” – that make it one of the most gripping and thought-provoking sci-fi movies of recent years.

Boasting a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Possessor is also available to rent on Apple TV+, Curzon, Google Play, the Microsoft store, Rakuten TV and Volta. Check out its trailer right here:
