Debuting in cinemas in March this year, Creed III could have been terrible. The third entry in a spin-off to a dying franchise, the ninth movie in the series overall, with the star stepping behind the camera for the first time.
Instead, the movie went on to make just shy of $275 million worldwide at the box office, and it remains one of the best reviewed blockbusters of the year so far, with a critics score higher than any of the Rocky movies.
The story this around focuses on the now-retired Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan, who also makes his directorial debut here) living a mostly happy life with his wife and business partner Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and their young daughter. But their world is rocked by the arrival of Damian (Jonathan Majors), a childhood friend of Adonis who has just been released from prison.
Despite his advanced years, Damian wants a chance to make a name for himself in the ring, and initially asks Adonis for help to get his career in motion, but before long, the lure of sport might be calling the retired champ back into the ring himself.
Check out our interview with Tessa Thompson about the threequel right here:
As we said in our own review when it was released in cinemas earlier this year, Creed III has no right to be this good, and with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, the majority of the other critics agreed with us:
Collider - "The movie honours the past while looking forward to the future, and gives Jordan - both the actor and the director - the spotlight in a way that shows his immense talents."
Polygon - "Michael B. Jordan imbues this spinoff/threequel with a cinematic zest the series has never seen before, expanding the visual language of the Hollywood boxing movie in remarkable ways."
Vulture - "The movie's greatest achievement is demonstrating that there’s more story to be told about Donnie, who after two films had been looking pretty thoroughly explored as a character."
Creed III is available to watch on Prime Video right now, and should you want to complete the trilogy, both Creed and Creed II are on Prime Video right now, too.
