Putting the ‘man’ into romance – JOE’s five favourite Valentine’s films for her AND him

Zombies, Nazis and sharks – trust us, it doesn't get more romantic than this...

Zombies, Nazis and sharks – trust us, it doesn’t get more romantic than this…

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and, here at JOE, we know you’ve obviously already got your card bought, the chocolates chosen and a big bunch of beautiful flowers picked out from our friends at Flowers.ie.

Crucially though, have you decided on which romantic film you’ll be sitting in to watch when you cosy up on the sofa beside your loved one this weekend? It’s such an important decision to make and we’re not exaggerating when we say that this choice might be one of the most important choices you ever make in your entire life.

OK, so maybe we’re exaggerating just a little bit…

To help you make the right cinematic choice, JOE has provided the list of five fantastic films below which will be perfect for both her AND him, striking just the right balance between action, comedy and helping you put the ‘man’ back into romance.

And no, Batman and the Joker are NOT flirting with each other in The Dark Knight so it’s not on the list.

Shaun Of The Dead (2004)

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s debut feature film is all about one guy trying to win back the girl of his dreams… while trying to survive a zombie apocalypse of course. Trying to get a girlfriend can be so difficult sometimes.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Your better half will fall in love with Cary Elwes’ dashing turn as Westley/Dread Pirate Roberts/The Man In Black, while you’ll spend all of your time doing a woeful Spanish impression of Inigo Montoya’s famous line; “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father; prepare to die!”

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

“Men and women can’t be friends because no man can be friends with a woman he finds attractive. He always wants to have sex with her.”

Whether you agree or disagree with Harry’s not-so-romantic take on life, When Harry Met Sally is undoubtedly one of the most perfect romantic comedies ever made, with brilliantly funny star performances from Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. The film is especially a must-watch for any men out there who foolishly think their lady-friend has never faked it in the bedroom.

Think again…

Casablanca (1942)

Leading men don’t come much cooler than Humphrey Bogart and in Casablanca he gives one of his greatest ever performances as Rick Blaine, a man torn between the sexy Swedish woman he loves (Ingrid Bergman) and saving Europe from the invasion of the Nazis. Ah, dilemmas, dilemmas, dilemmas.

JOE feels your Swedish lover/Nazi pain Rick…

Annie Hall (1977)

Never mind this Woody Allen classic being one of the best choices to watch with your loved one on Valentine’s Day, this fantastically funny flick is hands down one of the greatest films of all time. Sure – and here comes the obligatory SPOILER ALERT – our star-crossed lovers may not end up together (due to their relationship being a bit of a “dead shark”), but that will only remind your loved one of how lucky you both are to be together.

Smooth JOE, reeeeeal smooth.

With thanks to Flowers.ie, the perfect choice for flowers this Valentine’s Day.
