Nicolas Cage as Michael, an unemployed ex-marine drifter who stumbles into a bar in the rural town of Red Rock, Wyoming where the owner (J.T. Walsh) mistakes him for the hitman he hired to kill his wife Suzanne (Lara Flynn Boyle).
With the owner offering the drifter $10,000 for the job, Michael plays along - taking half the cash up front before then telling Suzanne what her husband is planning. However, it isn't long before the real killer (Dennis Hopper) shows up looking for his money.
