‘We’re going to be using very different filmmaking muscles on this new movie.’

It is here.

It is finally here.

Avengers: Endgame is now released in cinemas (our spoiler-free review here), and while it has been a long wait for fans, it must feel like an even longer wait for the movie’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo.

They’ve been a part of the MCU since they directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier back in 2014, and since then have provided three of the biggest entries in the series, with Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War, and now the Endgame.

JOE was lucky enough to chat to the directors in the lead-up to the release of the movie, and they did confirm that whatever the next step is for the MCU, they won’t be a part of it:

“For Joe and I, this is our last Marvel movie, for the foreseeable future,” said Anthony Russo. “We may end up working with Marvel again down the road. We have a lovely relationship with them. It has been one of the greatest creative collaborations of our careers, working with Kevin Feige and Marvel.

“But we’re at the end of our cycle here. So we definitely had a sense of finality in this movie, both for us on a personal level, but also for many people for many reasons.”

After making those movies pretty much back-to-back, you’d think that the Russos would have booked themselves a decent holiday, but they’ve actually already announced their next movie, Cherry.

Due out in cinemas in 2020, it tells the true story of an Army medic (played by their Spider-Man, Tom Holland) suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who becomes a serial bank robber after an addiction to drugs puts him in debt.

So we had to commend the brothers on their excellent worth ethic, but also on the lunacy in not taking some actual time off!

“Thank you for observing that, you are speaking the truth. We do need a day off. But we love what we do, we love making movies. It is really what we draw our energy from.

“The Marvel movies, the scale of them, they are very unique beasts. They’re so large, they are very difficult movies to execute.

“You know this next movie, Cherry, it is a very small film, an intimate film. So we’re going to be using very different filmmaking muscles on that movie, and it is a much smaller time commitment than a Marvel movie.”
