“It’s super f*cked up and hilarious” – Sam Rockwell chats about Oscar-favourite Three Billboards

Rory Cashin

“From your mouth to God’s ear, buddy!”

This really has to be one of our favourite interviews we’ve ever had the pleasure of doing.

Sam Rockwell is a total legend, adding an element of unfathomable coolness to roles in movies like Moon, The Way Way Back, The Assassination Of Jesse James, Iron Man 2, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, and Matchstick Men.

This time around, Rockwell plays a really, really, REALLY bad police officer in his new movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and one that goes head to head with Frances McDormand’s character, who wants the local police force to do more about the case of her murdered daughter.

The movie was written and directed by Martin McDonagh (the guy behind In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths), so we had to ask Rockwell how he felt about Martin offering him such a dark role.

But on top of that, we covered a whole host of other stuff, including what is it like hanging out with Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, his scenes in this movie with a much loved It’s Always Sunny actor, the next big role he has lined up (hint: he’s playing a recent U.S. President), and – of course – which lines of dialogue from cult classic comedy Galaxy Quest still get shouted at him to this day.

Check out our chats with the actor below:

Also, if you haven’t watched it yet, you can check out our interview with Martin McDonagh himself, right here.

Here is the trailer for the Oscar-favourite Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which arrives in Irish cinemas on Friday 12 January.
