"You've got red on you."
Released in 2004, Shaun Of The Dead is one of the more quotable comedies of recent years, with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright all coming together to create the new sub-genre known as the rom-zom-com.
It was the movie to sent Pegg into the acting stratosphere (he's been in a few Mission: Impossible movies since then, and it doesn't get much bigger than co-starring with Tom Cruise), while writer/director had the cult hit of 2017's summer with Baby Driver.
However, for a little while, they did consider making a weird sorta-sequel to their romantic-zombie-comedy, just replacing the zombies with vampires.
They spoke to
Entertainment Weekly as part of the oral history on Shaun Of The Dead, which is now being rightly considered a modern classic comedy, and the conversation turned to the potential sequel, with Pegg mentioning the incredible working title they gave it:
"I jokingly wrote a treatment for
From Dusk Till Shaun, which was a sequel to Shaun of the Dead. It was all about Shaun and Ed having to go up to Edinburgh, or something. I don’t know. It was ridiculous. And it was a joke. It wasn’t like a serious pitch. Edgar thought it would be funny to do the film again, but with vampires. But it was all just pub talk."
Edgar Wright said: "There was a brief idea we had, that we entertained for all of like 72 hours, where I thought you could do an alternate reality sequel. It basically starts with the same movie but then it becomes not about zombies. But these films, they take three years. So, it’s like, if you’re doing another movie, let’s do something completely different."
Maybe it is for the best they didn't do this, and moved on to the likes of Hot Fuzz and The World's End.
Besides, rom-vam-com just doesn't have the same right to it, does it?
